Confrides (Guadalest Valley)


Confrides is a municipality of the Valencian Community located in the interior of the province of Alicante, in the region of Marina Baixa. It has 303 inhabitants divided into two population centers: Confrides and Abdet.


Confrides, is located next to the northern area of ​​the Aitana Moutain and is one of the highest villages in the province of Alicante. Confrides rises to 785 m. above the sea level and is located in the upper part of the Valley of Guadalest, in the border between the Marina Baixa and the Comtat. This enables in its municipal term, 42.20km2, to offer many possibilities for the hikers. There is the Llob Mesh (1.360m), Peña Alta, Peñón Mulero, Pas de la Rabosa, the Simas del Partegat, the Port of Confrides (960 m.), The source of the Guadalest River and the sources known as Font De l'Arbre, Forata, Fuster and Machelis.

From Alicante, you can access to this locality by the AP-7 or the N-332 taking in Benidorm the CV-70. It limits with the municipal terms of Alcoleja, Benasau, Beniardá, Benifato, Cuatretondeta, Facheca, Famorca, and Sella


Confrides, has its origin in a Muslim farmhouse called Aljofra; After its conquest in the year 1264, Jaime I of Aragon donated the town to Vidal de Sarriá; Although its population remained in the hands of Sarriá for two generations, soon was assigned to Infant Pere; Later, the Cardona’s and Ariza’s families ruled over the jurisdiction of the town; During the second half of the fourteenth century and as a result of  the war in Castile, Confrides was conquered by the Castilian troops and maintained in its power until 1364 which was recovered by Pedro IV of Aragon; At the beginning of the sixteenth century and as a consequence of the war of the Germanies its Muslim population, which could then rise up to 120-160 inhabitants, was forced to convert to Christianity. The Mudejares of Confrides badly accepted their forced conversion and in 1526 rebelled against the decision of the junta of 1525. A few years before the expulsion, Confrides could count on about 240 inhabitants who opposed a strong armed resistance, took shelter to the Mountains of the Valley of Alauar, before the order of exile of the Moorish minority (1609). Confrides was distinguished by its rejection to the side Bourbon during the War of Succession.

Festivities in Confrides

Feast of San Antoni. The festivity consists of town gathering, in the street which receives the name of the saint, where a dinner is made with sausage (sausages, sausages, sobrasadas …) made in the same town. It is celebrated on June 13 and also a small procession is celebrated for the saint.
